Hello! My name is Susan Woodley and I live in Blythewood, SC. I am married and have two beautiful daughters. I am a Preschool Autism Teacher at Lake Carolina Elementary in Richland Two School District. I have been teaching for 16 years, 13 of those years have been at Lake Carolina Elementary. I work with 3 and 4 year olds with autism. My students spend the entire school day in my classroom. We work on social skills, communication skills, academic skills, fine motor and gross motor skills, self-help skills and so much more in our everyday routines. My students usually enter my class shortly after being diagnosed with autism and leave after their preschool years. My students come with a variety of abilities and my goal is to create learners that are as independent as possible and learn the skills to be successful in their school environment.
This school year we have had the opportunity to have a therapy dog come to our class once a week for about 30 minutes. The dog’s name is Camden; I have seen so many improvements during our time with Camden such as:
- Increased communication in the class
- Increased turn taking
- Learning proper dog etiquette
- Staying seated until their turn
- Requesting time with Camden
- Learning opportunities such as emotions, body parts, animals, etc.
- Greeting others (Camden and his owner-Ashley)
At a district in-service in October 2015, I spoke with another special education teacher in Richland Two that also has a PAALS dog in her classroom. She highlighted the amazing things that her PAALS dog, Roberta does in her class and school community. I began to think of all the benefits that a trained PAALS dog could bring to my classroom, my students and other students in my school. I contacted PAALS and began the process of being accepted as a PAALS client. In April 2016 I was accepted and can’t wait to have my own facility dog.
I am excited for the endless possibilities a PAALS dog can bring to my classroom and school. The dog will help me become a better teacher and create learning opportunities that are engaging, motivating and meaningful for the students.
We are hoping that Lake Carolina Lower Campus can have a PAALS facility dog starting the 2017-2018 school year!
