GRAVEL RIDE for RBFF
JUNE 5, 2021
A word from one of our clients that is raising scholarship funds for RBFF.
Service dogs are a blessing that many cannot afford. I aim to help others as I have been helped. I am blessed to walk each day with a service dog by my side who helps me live the most normal life possible. He is the whole reason I’m sitting here today able to write to you, as I ask for your help in helping me to give back. I want you to know a little bit about me and why I am doing this.
I am a retired fire captain who served thirteen years with the Columbia Fire Department in Columbia, South Carolina. My beloved career has left many marks in my life, many of which are great but some that are utterly haunting. For years I tried to hide from the stigma of being “too weak” to handle the sights of the job but it only made it worse. After a few unfortunate incidents my cup was full and I could no longer hide my issues. Thanks to my loving family, friends, and a great therapist I was able to get the help I needed. After a while, it was agreed that medicine could help but that something alternative may work better. So I applied to get a service dog in an effort to try to stay in the job for a full career and that’s when Palmetto Animal Assisted Life Services (PAALS) came into my life.

PAALS is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization based in South Carolina. It takes at least 2 years of training these incredible dogs who will go on to spend their lives helping someone like me live a more fulfilled life. This process costs nearly forty thousand dollars to care for and train just one service dog. All of this is funded purely by donations. Clients are only asked to raise five thousand dollars for tuition to cover their team training once they have been matched with a dog. However, I did not have to pay that tuition. This is thanks to the Rob’s Best Friend Fund, which pays the tuition for Veterans and First Responders. I’m very blessed to have received this amazing gift along with the most amazing partner a guy could ask for. PAALS, the Rob’s Best Friend Fund, and my service dog have saved my life. I want to help pay it forward for many more to come.
As a cyclist, I can do so and will do so. I ask humbly for your support. Not for me but for PAALS and their mission to help others.
With much appreciation,
Raise $5,000 for the Robs Best Friend Fund: By training for and completing the UNBOUND Gravel 200, I will use this as my platform to get the word out. I am hoping to get donations for each mile of my journey. This can be to honor someone special or to support the cause.
