PAALS is thrilled to honor the memory of their founders brother, Rob Baxter, by serving another former police officer in need. Tate is a Citadel graduate and a Charleston police officer. Shortly after running with his dog (who has since died of old age) on the beach, Tate had a life changing aneurism that has left him paralyzed on his left side. Tate will not longer need to fight for that independence alone, thanks to PAALS' assistance dog, Grace. Grace will soon be helping Tate to open doors, assist with laundry and provide essential companionship with endless hours of love.

| Jeff Hopkins is a 26 year old young man born with cerebral palsy. His CP especially affects his left side and ability to talk. Consequently, Jeff drives a power wheelchair and talks with a computer. Jeff and his family live in Greenville where Jeff attended school with “typical” students. He has been pursuing a degree in Architectural AutoCAD at Greenville Tech. Jeff enjoys traveling, especially a trip that includes visiting and/or riding steam trains. Jeff will be teamed with Copper, a 2 year old labradoodle. Jeff has asked that Copper be trained to pick up objects he drops, bring items to him on his lap or desk, help him ride elevators, and assist in pulling up the covers at night. Jeff’s parents, Leanne and Bill, are excited that Copper has been trained to assist Jeff when he needs assistance. This will allow Jeff some more independence as well as an extra set of helping hands (paws!) |

| Yeats helps in therapy by using skills such as retrieval skills to help challenge people's balance. This is a fun and interactive way that helps people work on improving their balance and reduce their risk for falls. Yeats also provides pet therapy. He attends assisted living facilities and independent living facilities and provides comfort for those who are sick and need a little extra TLC.
Yeats will be participating in part of the Rehab Team and will be helping with stroke rehab by using retrieval skills to assist with balance activities; a tool to help people and motivate people who have limited use of of 1 upper extremity by having them pet Yeats. He will also assist in gait training by assisting while they practice walking. | | | |
